What Exactly is the CBD Entourage Effect?

Katie Salvi
May 22, 2025

Cannabis buds are often covered in a sticky-type residue called resin. It is in this resin that healing compounds like tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) are located. The pain-relieving and calming effects of the marijuana plant as a whole is often attributed to a scientific phenomenon known as the “Cannabis Entourage Effect”.

What is the CBD Entourage Effect?

In a biological sense, certain chemical compounds work together to produce a synergistic response that helps to increase the level of relief that would not have been achieved without this collaborative effect. In this sense, medicinal marijuana-based therapies often employ a combination of compounds that are known to contribute to the CBD Entourage Effect, however, using pure isolate of one or the other compound can be equally as effective in treating various medical conditions.

Which form of CBD is the best to use?

With the growing popularity of CBD, CBD oil, and a host of other CBD-based products, this has become a hot question of debate. When it comes to extracted CBD, the two common forms are either broad-spectrum (also known as whole-plant extract) or pure CBD isolate. Depending on your medical needs, one form of CBD may be preferred over the other. In this article, we will discuss the benefits of both forms and provide insight that may be beneficial in making the right selection for your needs.

In addition to determining the most appropriate CBD extract type to use, it is also important to consider the mode of use that may provide the best results. Modes of use can include taking capsules, using topical creams, or using vaping machines to inhale CBD. The growing popularity of using diffusers has created a higher demand for the CBD isolate.

What is pure isolate CBD?

Unlike the broad-spectrum CBD, pure isolate only contains CBD and excludes all other cannabinoids, terpenes, or healthy fatty acids, most commonly incorporated in the whole-plant extract. Cannabis, in its natural form, contains over 100 active cannabinoids, so the pure isolate creates a more concentrated product for those patients looking to experience CBD medical benefits, without the synergistic effects of the other cannabis compounds.

How can pure isolate CBD be used? What conditions is it know to treat?

With states and various countries outlawing THC containing products, CBD-only medicines have quickly gained popularity among those seeking all-natural, legal ways to manage chronic pain and various neurological or degenerative disorders. For example, Charlotte’s Web5, a type of cannabis strain that was concentrated into a CBD oil to treat severe epilepsy in children has launched pure isolate CBD into mainstream media. However, as a result of the growing demand for medicinal marijuana, the notoriety of Charlotte’s Web lead many states to CBD-only laws. In these states, pure isolate CBD is legal, while most THC containing products are not.

What are broad-spectrum extracts?

These extracts leverage the Entourage Effects that can be produced when a larger number of cannabinoids are combined. For example, the cannabis plant contains terpenes, which have a known anti-inflammatory benefit as well as other cannabinoid compounds that can enhance CBD’s ability to soothe pain and calm the body’s nervous system.

Whole-plant extracts, from reputable and licensed manufacturers, will contain a precise combination of the cannabis plant's most powerful and healing cannabinoids, including THC, although often in very low levels that will not result in a “high” feeling. When THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids are put together, they enhance how they work as a whole and achieve higher (and faster) levels of pain relief than if they were taken in isolation. However, as some states have regulations in the percentage of legal THC (if even legal at all) that can be present in full-spectrum products, it is important to know before purchasing how much THC is contained in these types of products, so as not to inadvertently break the laws.
