Broad Spectrum CBD vs. Full Spectrum CBD vs. CBD Isolate: What’s the Difference?

Katie Salvi
May 28, 2025

Whether you’re new to the CBD world or a seasoned consumer, shopping for your perfect CBD product can bring up a whole host of questions you never thought you had:

“Do I need a broad-spectrum or full-spectrum product?”

“What’s this ‘isolate’ I keep hearing about?”

“Will any of these products get me high?”

“What happens if I have to take a drug test?”

Don’t worry - if you’re confused about the difference and what you should be looking for, you’re not alone. We’re here to break down the three most common types of CBD products you’ll see on the shelves so you can shop with the knowledge necessary to make an informed purchase without risking your job or health.

Full Spectrum CBD

Full-spectrum CBD is the most minimally processed type of CBD concentrate. It contains every plant material that can be extracted including cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, and fatty acids. Full-spectrum products are often preferred because they’re most accommodating to the entourage effect - when nothing is excluded, every ingredient can work in harmony.

The reason why some people don’t prefer full-spectrum CBD is because it contains every naturally occurring cannabinoid in the plant, which means it may contain THC, the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis that gets you high. If you’re not looking to get a buzz or you want to consume CBD without failing a drug test, full-spectrum is probably not your ideal choice.

Full Spectrum is ideal if:

  • You don’t mind a little buzz or sedative effects from the THC
  • You live where cannabis is fully legal
  • You don’t have to pass any drug tests
  • You prefer CBD made with the least amount of processing

Broad Spectrum CBD

Broad Spectrum CBD contains everything that full spectrum CBD contains, except for the THC. This requires an extra step in processing to isolate and remove the THC, which is what makes it possible to consume CBD without any psychoactive effects. All of our products are made with broad spectrum CBD so you don’t have to worry about your wellness routine affecting any other part of your life.

Broad Spectrum is ideal if:

  • You have to pass a drug test
  • You’re sensitive to THC
  • You want the benefits of the entourage effect
  • You want to use CBD without getting high

CBD Isolate

CBD isolate is 99+% pure CBD that has been completely isolated from all other cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, and fatty acids. It’s typically sold as a fine white powder that can be added to other oils, beverages, or food. While it’s not often recommended if you want to achieve the entourage effect, CBD isolate is great for people who are sensitive to other cannabinoids or want to supplement an existing product with some straight CBD.

When buying a CBD isolate, it’s especially important to verify the purity, especially if you’re someone with a THC sensitivity. As with any CBD product, it’s crucial that you check for lab testing results before buying to ensure you’re getting the purity that’s advertised on the label.

CBD Isolate is ideal if:

  • You want to add pure CBD to other products or oils
  • You’re sensitive to THC, CBN, or other cannabinoids

Ultimately, the difference between a full-spectrum vs. broad-spectrum vs. isolate CBD is the manufacturing process and the number of ingredients. One type of CBD is not necessarily superior to the others, it all comes down to your preference and what you want to achieve with your product.

Every product we manufacture at Highline Wellness is made with a proprietary blend of broad-spectrum CBD, so you can consume it any time of the day without feeling “high”.
